Kittenproofing Tips

June 15 2016

Has a kitten recently joined your household? Congratulations! Having a kitten is lots of fun, but it’s also a lot of responsibility. Eventually, little Fluffy will grow into a sleepy, mature kitty whose main interests are naps, cuddles, and food. But for now, your little ball of fur has a few other things on her agenda, such as playing, exploring, and being adorable. Kittens have a knack for getting into trouble, so you’ll want to take some precautions to keep your furbaby safe. Read on for some great kittenproofing tips from a Cherry Hill, NJ veterinarian.

Wires and Cords

Electrical wires, strings, cords, and anything made of twine or rope can be very dangerous to a frisky kitten. Little Fluffy could be seriously hurt if she chews on a live wire! Drape cords are also hazardous, as they could strangle your cute pet. Remove or secure wires, cords, and anything that dangles.

Plastic

Many cats are drawn to plastic, perhaps because of the crinkly texture. Unfortunately, plastic bags can easily choke or entangle a kitten. Pick up any plastic wrappers, and remember to cut the plastic rings that hold beverages together.

Hazardous Objects

Little Fluffy will want to investigate every item she finds, and figure out what she can and can’t eat or play with. Remove small objects, such as pen caps, pieces of jewelry, beads, and anything else that could be a potential choking danger. Sharp items are also a no-no.

Toxic Items

Store household chemicals, automotive products, cleaning agents, and medication in secure cabinets, well out of the reach of curious furballs. You’ll also want to be sure to remove any plants that aren’t safe for cats. Check the ASPCA website for a list of toxic and non-toxic plants.

Large Appliances

Little Fluffy is going to be very curious about her new domain. Your tiny feline will explore every nook and cranny of your home. This sense of adventure can lead your kitten right into danger! Keep appliances, such as washers, dryers, and toilets, shut when not in use.

Openings

Never underestimate the capacity of a kitten to get into mischief! Make sure that your screens and doors close securely. You’ll also want to seal off any openings in vents, or behind furniture or cabinets.
