Feeding Fido

September 15 2016

If there’s one thing we can say for sure about Man’s Best Friend, it’s that he has a very healthy appetite. Your pup will probably happily gobble down anything that you put in his dish, and will also snatch up any bits of food that drop to the floor. But what exactly should Fido be eating? A Cherry Hill, NJ veterinarian offers some tips on feeding your dog in this article.

Reading Labels

Pet food labels can be very confusing, and often more than a little misleading. Take time to read the labels on your dog’s food, and watch for slick marketing tactics. For instance, a pet food that says ‘Chicken Flavor’ may only have a tiny percentage of chicken in it. Look for brands that list meat as the first and most frequently-listed ingredient. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

People Foods

Feel free to offer your furry friend plain, cooked, boneless meat, fish, or poultry. Eggs and cheese are also safe in small amounts. Fido can also eat many different veggies, including bananas; apples (just the flesh); pumpkin; sweet potato; beans; peas; carrots; and blueberries. Ask your vet for more information.

Toxic Foods

Many of our favorite foods are toxic to dogs. Never give your canine buddy chocolate; alcohol; caffeine; avocados; pitted fruits; raw yeast, dough, or meat; garlic, onions, and scallions; nuts; products containing xylitol; or grapes, currants, and raisins. If you aren’t sure if something is safe or not, err on the side of caution, and offer Fido something else.

Doggy Diets

Fido’s nutritional needs will depend on several factors, including his age, weight, breed, health, and lifestyle. Ask your vet for nutritional recommendations, including portion sizes and healthy snacks.

Changing Foods

Changing foods too quickly can wreak havoc on Fido’s furry belly. Changes to your pet’s diet should be made slowly, and only after consulting your vet.

Supplements

As Fido ages, he may benefit from certain supplements. Fish oil, for instance, can help lubricate your pet’s joints, and can be beneficial for dogs with arthritis. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Begging

We know, those big sad eyes can be very hard to resist. However, don’t let Fido convince you to overindulge him with fatty snacks. That’s very bad for his health!
