Puppyproofing Tips

September 1 2017

Has a new puppy recently joined your household? Congratulations! Your little buddy is bound to keep you smiling with his adorable antics and affectionate doggy kisses. Puppies are super cute! Unfortunately, they’re also super curious. Little Fido sometimes tends to try to learn about things by, well, eating them. This can be very dangerous! In order to make your home safe for your furry friend you’ll need to do some puppy proofing. A Cherry Hill, NJ vet offers tips on puppyproofing in this article.

Wires and Cords

Wires and cords are very dangerous for frisky furballs. You don’t want little Fido chewing on a live wire, or pulling a lamp down on himself. Secure wires and cords, including drape cords. You can treat the ones you can’t move with a taste deterrent.

Laundry

Puppies sometimes like to chew clothing, especially smaller pieces, like socks, washcloths, and underwear. Be sure to keep your clothes off the floor.

Plastic Items

Plastic bags, wrappers, and ties can all prove serious choking hazards for our canine buddies. Keep these things well out of paws’ reach!

Small Objects

Anything small should be kept in a secure spot where little Fido can’t get to it. This includes beads, pen caps, coins, craft kit pieces, fishing tackle and lures, sewing kit pieces, and anything else that your pet could try to eat.

Trash

Man’s Best Friend is quite opportunistic by nature, and has been known to go through the garbage in the hopes of scoring himself a snack. The trash can contain many dangerous items, such as tinfoil, can lids, bones, and plastic wrap. Use a garbage can with a secure lid.

Toxic Plants

Did you know that many popular houseplants are poisonous to dogs? If you’re not sure whether your plants are safe or not, check the ASPCA site.

Personal Items

When it comes to chewing, nothing is sacrosanct, as far as little Fido is concerned. Keep personal belongings, like shoes, purses, phones, and books, out of paws’ reach.

Chemicals/Medicine

Household cleaning agents, automotive products, lawn and garden chemicals, herbicides, fungicides, and paint are all toxic to little Fido. Human medication is also poisonous to pets. Keep these things in secure cabinets where your pooch can’t reach them.
