Obesity in Cats

January 15 2018

Have you noticed your cat getting a bit pudgy lately? If so, she’s certainly in good company! Many pet cats are overweight or obese. While kitties can be quite cute when they’re chubby, obesity is very bad for your pet’s health. Those extra pounds are associated with some very serious medical issues! In this article, a Cherry Hill, NJ vet discusses obesity in cats.

Health Risks

Many of the medical risks associated with obesity in cats are the same as those for people. If your furball is overweight, she has elevated risks of developing some very serious health issues, such as heart disease, diabetes, liver and kidney issues, skin problems, and bone/joint disorders. Obesity can also increase your feline pal’s risks of developing certain cancers, and can even shorten her lifespan! Fluffy will be much healthier staying at or near her ideal weight.

Feeding Fluffy

While some cats are quite finicky, others will eat, well, pretty much anything. Offer Fluffy high-quality, nourishing food, but don’t let her cute meows con you into overindulging her with fatty treats. Portion control is also very important. Even giving your feline buddy just a few extra calories a day can cause her to gain a pound a year. That may not be much for a person, but it’s a lot for a cat!

Kitty Workouts

When kitties are young, they’re very playful and active. However, as your cat grows, she will slow down …. way down. Adult cats sleep at least 14 hours a day, on average. When Fluffy is actually awake, keep her entertained and active by providing her with lots of toys and playing with her regularly. Even just a few minutes of pouncing and running will be beneficial. It’s also important to offer your furball some kitty furniture that encourages her to stay active.

Fluffy’s Diet

Do you have a furry little butterball on your hands? Don’t make any changes to your feline friend’s menu without first consulting your vet. Changing your cat’s diet too quickly can make her very sick! Just like people, kitties have to slim down slowly to lose weight safely. Ask your vet for specific advice, including serving sizes, supplements, and suitable treats.
