7 Ways to Keep Your Dog Hydrated

July 1 2018

Summer is here! One thing that is very important for dog owners to pay attention to in hot weather is making sure their pets are properly hydrated. Fido is wearing a fur coat, and can overheat very quickly on sweltering days. Here, a Cherry Hill, NJ vet suggests some great ways to keep your canine pal properly hydrated.

Outdoor Bowl

Does your canine buddy have a yard to play in? Make sure Fido always has water outdoors. One cute way to do this is to get a large plant urn, and put a stainless steel bowl in it. Wash your pup’s dishes daily, to prevent dirt and bacteria from building up, and ensure the water hasn’t been contaminated by wild animals.

Doggy Drinking Fountain

Consider getting Fido a doggy drinking fountain or an automated dispenser. This is a good idea if your pooch often drains his dish.

On The Go

Always bring water for Fido when you are out and about. You can find collapsible doggy dishes, which are very lightweight, and can be folded up to fit in a pocket or backpack. You can also get your furry friend a doggy water bottle with a dispenser. These are great for hiking!

Broth

If you want to encourage Fido to drink a little more, try pouring some sodium-free broth into his water, or just give him a bowl of it. (Note: if your furry buddy isn’t drinking as much as he should, consult your vet. This can be a sign of medical issues.)

Multiple Stations

Keep extra water bowls in different places in your house. Every little bit helps!

Ice Cubes

While you don’t want to give Fido too many ice cubes, there’s no reason he can’t have some as treats. You can also offer your pup frozen sodium-free broth cubes.

Wet Food

Wet food has a higher water content than kibble, and can help keep Fido properly hydrated. Follow your vet’s recommendations.

Tips

Keep an eye out for signs of doggy dehydration. Some common ones are panting; thick or sticky drool; sunken eyes; lethargy; dry nose or mouth; pale gums; dark urine; vomiting; and diarrhea. If you notice any of these warning signs, immediately give Fido some water and contact your vet.
