Squirrel Appreciation Day

January 15 2019

Did you know that January 21 is Squirrel Appreciation Day? We’re guessing probably not. And while you hopefully don’t have a pet squirrel, you may very well have some in your yard or neighborhood. If you have a dog or cat, your furry pal may also be quite interested in these little guys. Here, a Cherry Hill, NJ vet discusses squirrels.

Fun Squirrel Facts

There are squirrels on almost every continent on earth, except for Antarctica. Here in North America, grey squirrels are the most common kind. These fluffy-tailed furballs come in a pretty wide range of sizes. The smallest squirrel is the African pygmy squirrel, which is only about three inches long on average. The biggest is the Indian giant squirrel, which can grow up to three feet long!

Hunting

Do you let your cat go outdoors? If so, she may very well try to capture some of your local squirrels. Back in the day, Fluffy’s hunting prowess was very much appreciated. These days, most of us could do without the ‘gifts’ our feline pals bring us. Keep your kitty inside, and give her a catnip squirrel to play with.

Clacking

Have you ever noticed your cat making funny clicking noises as she looks out the window? Some people call this clacking. Kitties usually only do this when they’ve spotted something they would consider prey in the wild … such as squirrels. No one knows why cats do this, but that really isn’t surprising. We don’t know why kitties do a lot of things!

Squirrel Watching

Both dogs and cats enjoy watching squirrels. If you have a yard, give your pet a comfy spot with a good window view. Watching local wildlife can be great entertainment for both Fido and Fluffy!

Dogs

Many of our canine pals instinctively try to lunge after squirrels. This can actually be a bit dangerous, as you don’t want Fido hauling you along or bowling you over. Ask your vet for advice on teaching your pooch better petiquette.

Fleas

Squirrels may be cute, but they aren’t entirely harmless. They can carry fleas, ticks, and other parasites, and can also transmit diseases and bacteria. Keep up with your pet’s vaccinations and parasite control products!
