Adopt A Less Adoptable Pet Week

September 15 2019

Did you know that Adopt A Less Adoptable Pet Week starts tomorrow, September 16th? We love seeing any animal go to a loving forever home. However, many of our furry friends have a very hard time getting adopted. Senior pets and pets with medical issues are most often overlooked. This is very sad, because they sometimes make the best pets! A local Cherry Hill, NJ vet discusses adopting less adoptable pets in this article.

Ask Questions

One reason people are reluctant to adopt pets with disabilities, and/or older pets, is that they assume that these pets require a lot more care than other animals, and will therefore be more expensive. However, that isn’t always the case. In fact, many of these pets just need a little extra TLC. For instance, a deaf dog can be trained to respond to hand signals. A blind pup, on the other hand, may need runner carpets and baby gates to help him avoid falling down stairs or bumping into things. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Don’t Overlook Senior Pets

Senior pets often have difficulty getting adopted. We know, puppies and kittens are absolutely adorable, but they’re also very feisty and energetic. However, older pets have some great qualities that make them wonderful animal companions. For one thing, they tend to be naturally calm, and are therefore much less destructive than their younger counterparts are. They also don’t need as much exercise or stimulation. Last but not least, they often have a very sweet and loving nature that can absolutely melt your heart. Fido is super cute with his grey muzzle and lovable expressions, while Fluffy can put a smile on your face even when she’s sleeping.

Do A Good Deed

Helping animals in need is very rewarding, and is definitely something to be proud of. You may be surprised at how great it feels to give that one lucky pet a second chance at happiness. Of course, your kindness won’t be in vain. Many pets that were rescued from shelters absolutely blossom with love and good care. Our animal friends are also smart enough to know when someone has helped them. You may find that your less-adoptable pet is extremely loving and affectionate!
