Halloween is coming up quick! Stores are already filling up with pumpkin-flavored everything, and seasonal trappings, like scarecrows, are popping up everywhere. Many of our canine patients seem to really enjoy this time of year. After all, Fido gets to run and play without dealing with heat or cold. However, Halloween can be hazardous to Man’s Best Friend. Here, a Cherry Hill, NJ vet offers some tips on keeping dogs safe and healthy around the autumn holiday.
Candy
Halloween can be a boon for anyone with a sweet tooth. Just don’t share any of those goodies with your canine companion. Many candies contain things like nuts, raisins, chocolate, and/or xylitol, which are all toxic to our furry friends. Hard candies and candy wrappers are also unsafe, as they can be choking hazards.
Traffic
There’s usually more traffic than normal on and around Halloween. Keep Fido on a tight leash as you walk him, especially if you’re in an area with a lot of props, like mechanical zombies, that may scare him. If you have a yard, limit your pet’s outdoor time as the holiday approaches, especially after dark. Dogs may get frightened or agitated by costumed pedestrians. You also don’t want to risk someone feeding your pup something that isn’t good for him.
Decorations
Never underestimate Fido’s penchant for eating and chewing on things. Jack-o-lanterns, string lights, fake spiderwebs, and other trappings are all unsafe for pups. Keep these things in secure spots Fido can’t reach. Candles and heaters are another concern, as is anything small or sharp, such as pieces of kids’ costumes.
Visitors
Fido is a very dedicated door doggy, but he may get a bit frazzled if the doorbell keeps ringing. Your pooch may also be afraid of or confused by kids’ outfits. Consider putting your canine buddy in a quiet back room with comfy bedding, food, toys, and treats. Turn on a radio to mask the noise.
Costumes
We know, it’s hard not to laugh at some of the adorable costumes Fido has worn. However, if you decide to dress your pet up, be sure to put his comfort and safety first. Avoid anything that is tight, hot, or itchy, as well as outfits that restrict his vision or movement. Ask your vet for more advice.
