Things To Consider Before Getting A Puppy

November 15 2020

Are you considering adopting a puppy? Getting a new pet is a big deal, and can be very exciting. Baby dogs are absolutely adorable, and lots of fun to play and cuddle with. However, little Fido does need a lot of TLC, as well as quite a bit of training. Therefore, it’s important to think carefully before deciding to adopt a young dog. A local animal hospital Cherry Hill, NJ lists some of the things you’d want to consider in this article.

Schedule

Potty training is a definite must. Keep in mind that your canine buddy will only be able to hold his bladder for a short time. As a rule of thumb, puppies can hold it for about one hour for each month of his age. For example, a three-month old can only wait three hours. Of course, if you’re working from home, this may be the perfect time to adopt a pup.

Socialization

Socialization is absolutely crucial! Dogs that were not properly socialized as puppies have a much higher chance of developing behavioral issues down the road. Of course, socializing during a pandemic can be a bit tricky. One thing you can try is dressing up in different outfits. You can also take little Fido to a park or trail, or have a few people come by to pet and play with him.

Training

Our canine pals really strive to please their humans, but they do need proper training and guidance. To help little Fido grow up to be a good boy, you’ll need to teach him basic obedience commands, such as Sit, Stay, Heel, Come, and Lay Down. You’ll also want to nip bad habits, like lunging or, in some cases, getting on the couch, in the bud.

Crate Training

We strongly recommend crate training. Dogs tend to feel more secure when they have their own little ‘dens’ to retreat to. This will also make travelling with your furry friend safer, and will make being crated much easier for him down the road.

Entertainment/Exercise

Young dogs are basically furry, four-legged bundles of mischief. Little Fido will need lots of toys and playtime. You’ll also need to do plenty of puppy proofing, and keep anything you don’t want him chewing on out of reach.
