Little Pampered Dog Day

April 15 2021

There’s a new pet holiday coming up, and the puparazzi are really excited over it. Little Pampered Dog Day is April 27th! Our canine companions come in all shapes and sizes. And while they have the same basic needs, their exact care regimens will vary. Size definitely plays a role here. After all, a Chihuahua won’t have the same needs as a Saint Bernard would. Read on as a Cherry Hill, NJ vet discusses small dog care.

Training

Many people make the mistake of thinking that small dogs don’t need training. Don’t let Fido off the hook just because he’s small. Little dogs can still get pushy, and can be prone to nipping or running off.

Steps

It’s not uncommon for little dogs to hurt themselves jumping up or down from beds, chairs, and couches. That can be a pretty long drop for a pint-sized pup! Get pet ramps or stairs to help your canine pal get around.

Dental Issues

Little dogs often have issues with overcrowding. There’s not a lot of room for all of those teeth! They can also crack or break their teeth on hard toys and chews. Keep up with Fido’s dental care and exams.

Products

Take care to only get products that were made for little dogs. Things made for a bigger pooch may not be safe for Fido!

Treats

We can’t really talk about pampered dogs without discussing treats. Stick with safe, healthy options, and don’t go overboard. You’re not doing your furry pal any favors by overfeeding him or giving him foods that aren’t safe!

Activity

Just like any other pooch, little pups need proper activity to stay healthy. However, your pint-sized pal will probably get a pretty decent workout just running around on those short legs. In fact, with these guys, it’s best to err on the side of caution. Take care not to over-exhaust your canine buddy.

Eye Care

Do Fido’s eyes often seem red or watery? This isn’t unusual with smaller dogs. Because they’re so close to the ground, they can easily get dust and debris in their eyes. Use clean cloths or cotton pads to gently clean tearstains. Also, try not to put sharp objects, such as thorny plants, at your furry friend’s eye level.
