Helping Your Shelter Cat Get Settled

June 1 2021

It’s Adopt A Shelter Cat Month! We think all kitties deserve loving homes and warm laps to snuggle up in. Going to a shelter is a purrfect way to find your new pet. Of course, change can be difficult for Fluffy, so you’ll want to take steps to help her adjust. Here, a Cherry Hill, NJ vet offers some advice on helping Fluffy settle in.

Make Your Home Comfy

The best way to make Fluffy feel that she’s gone to a life of kitty luxury? Turn your home into a safe haven for her. This is actually much easier than it may sound. In addition to providing basics, like food, water, and a clean litterbox, you’ll want to set out lots of soft beds, and perhaps some cardboard boxes or paper bags for Fluffy. Your furball will also appreciate a scratching post, and perhaps a cat tower.

Introduce Roommates Slowly

Our feline friends take first impressions very seriously. If you have other pets, proceed with caution when introducing them. It’s best to keep your furry pals separated at first. Take your time with letting them meet and interact. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Don’t Force Attention

Kitties tend to feel safest when they are settled into a steady routine. It will probably take Fluffy a few days to adjust and start exploring, and a few weeks to really start to feel safe. Don’t try to force attention on your feline buddy as she’s adjusting. This is very important! Letting her come to you will build trust, while chasing after her will make her wary.

Visit The Vet

One of the first things you’ll want to do is introduce Fluffy to her new doctor. Shelter cats are usually already fixed, but your furball will need a thorough exam. If she hasn’t been fixed or microchipped yet, you’ll want to schedule those as well.

Let Love Grow

Giving that one lucky furball a second chance may be a small act of kindness, but it could have a huge impact on your life. Cats tend to be very, very affectionate to people who have helped them. You’ll be repaid for your kindness with lots of purrs, cuddles, and entertainment.
