Tips For Playing Fetch

October 15 2021

Does your dog like playing Fetch? If so, Fido may be excited to learn that tomorrow is National Fetch Day! Tossing a ball or stick for your canine pal isn’t exactly rocket science, but there are things to keep in mind. Here, a Haddon Township & Cherry Hill, NJ vet offers some advice for playing Fido’s favorite game.

Do It Regularly

If it was up to Fido, you may very well be heading outdoors to play Fetch several times a day. You don’t have to go quite that far. However, your pooch will benefit both mentally and physically from frequent play sessions. This will be good for you, too. Tossing a ball with your furry best friend is a great way to unwind after a long day!

Choose Suitable Toys

Fido may happily run after anything you throw him. However, not everything is safe for him to chase after. Your canine companion could crack or break his teeth on a hard object. And, while your playful pup may love chasing sticks, there is a chance that they could splinter in his mouth. Stick with safe, suitable toys.

Ramp Up The Workout

Is your four-legged friend a furry bundle of zoom? Fetch can help Fido work off some of that excess zing. Pick a spot where your pooch has to run uphill to bring his toy back to you. That will give him a great cardio workout! Just be sure to ask your vet about suitable exercises: this may be too much cardio for some pups.

Play Indoors … If You Can

This one probably isn’t a good option for a Great Dane. However, if you have a little dog, you can play inside. Just pick a spot without a lot of breakable objects.

Build On It

Do you want to teach Fido to bring you your remote, or get you a cold drink? The basics of these cute–and convenient–tricks are all based on Fetch! Look online for specific instructions.

Consult Your Vet

Fetch is fun for Fido, and it’s definitely a great doggy workout, but it’s not necessarily right for all of our canine buddies. Some pups shouldn’t be encouraged to jump or stand on their back legs, while others really shouldn’t run or exercise vigorously. Ask your vet for specific advice.
