The Fourth Of July is just around the corner. This is one of the most dangerous holidays for our canine pals, so you’ll want to take some precautions to keep your furry buddy safe. A local Cherry Hill, NJ vet offers some advice on this below.
Preventative Care
Make sure that your four-legged buddy is microchipped, and is wearing ID tags. Fido should also be current on vaccines and parasite control. It’s not a bad idea to do a tick check, either. These simple precautions could end up making a world of difference.
Security
Even if Fido is usually good off-leash, this is definitely not a good time to test him. Keep your canine companion leashed or in fenced areas.
Barbeque Safety
Grilling out? Don’t let Fido get too close to the grill! Dogs have a tendency to get underfoot, especially when there’s food involved.
Food
Don’t let your pup have grapes and raisins; chocolate; avocado; alcohol; garlic and onions; raw dough or yeast; pitted fruits; and meat on the bone. Fido may enjoy some doggy ice cream, or some sodium-free broth cubes. Offer him a plain burger instead.
Garbage
Garbage is one concern: it could contain things like skewers, toothpicks, and bones, which are definitely not safe for your furry friend. Use a can that closes securely, and pick up trash and leftovers as soon as everyone is done eating.
Chemicals
Chemicals, such as lighter fluid and torch fluid, are also unsafe. It’s far too easy for dogs to walk through something, or get it spilled on their fur, and then ingest it by licking it off.
Sunscreen
July 4th can be a scorcher! Dogs with pale or thin fur are susceptible to sunburn. Put a pet-safe sunscreen on your canine buddy!
Fireworks
Bring pets indoors before the fireworks start. Many dogs are absolutely terrified of the noise and commotion, which makes them prone to bolting. If Fido is extremely scared of the noise, put him in a quiet, comfy spot, and turn a radio on to mask the noise. Pet-calming products may also help. Ask your vet for recommendations.
Keep Fido Cool
Keep a close eye on Fido! Make sure he always has water. Your four-legged friend may also have fun splashing around in a kiddie pool or pet fountain.
