Ways To Keep Your Pet Safe This Year

January 1 2023

Happy New Year! As we leave 2022 behind and move into 2023, many people are pondering their personal goals for the new year. Why not incorporate your furry best friend in your resolutions? Fido and Fluffy would of course be thrilled with more snacks or playtime. However, simply taking some precautions to keep them safe is also a great goal. A Cherry Hill, NJ vet offers some tips on this below.

Petproofing

Fido and Fluffy are both very playful and curious, which is one reason they are so much fun. Unfortunately for them, they don’t really know what is and isn’t safe. Remove or secure anything small or sharp. Items with strings, cords, or ropes are also potential hazards, as are plastic bags, wraps, and ties. Chemicals and toxins are another concern. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Training

This one mostly applies to Fido: Fluffy is more likely to train you. Your canine pal should know all the basic doggy obedience commands, such as Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. Being able to maintain control of your pup can definitely help prevent accidents and injuries.

Basic Safety

Small but key precautions can go a long way here. For dogs, keeping Fido secure is a big one. Don’t let your canine buddy run around off-leash, except in fenced areas. As for Fluffy, she’s much better off staying inside.

ID

We hope none of our patients get lost, but there’s always a chance it could happen. Millions of pets are lost or stolen each year. While precautions mentioned above can help prevent this from happening, it’s also important to have a safety net in place. Make sure that your furry pal is microchipped and wearing proper ID tags. For adventurous pets, a GPS-enabled tag or collar is also a good thing to have.

Preventative Care

It’s much easier (and cheaper) to prevent certain illnesses and diseases than it is to treat them. Keep up with your furry buddy’s vaccines, parasite control products, and have them examined regularly.

Climate Control

Our four-legged friends are just as susceptible to weather extremes as we are. Make sure Fido and Fluffy always have access to areas that are at a comfortable temperature.
