Our feline buddies are known for being easy to care for. However, Fluffy isn’t quite as independent as she would like us to think. Kitties—even aloof ones—actually do need a good amount of TLC to stay healthy! A local Cherry Hill, NJ vet lists some common cat care mistakes in this article.
Overfeeding
Many kitties have their humans pretty much wrapped around their paws when it comes to food. If you fill Fluffy’s bowl or give her treats every time she meows at you, you may soon find your furball turning into a butterball. Fat cats may be cute, but they face some very serious health risks, such as heart disease and diabetes.
Letting Fluffy Roam
We know, cats love outdoor kitty sports, like rolling around in the dirt and leaving pawprints on our windshields. However, as soon as Fluffy sets her furry little feet outside, she faces some very serious threats, such as traffic, weather, and wild animals. Keep your feline pal safe and sound indoors!
Isolation/Boredom
Our feline friends are collectively very tired, and spend a rather ridiculous amount of time sleeping. However, Fluffy can’t sleep all the time. Your pet needs something to amuse herself with when she is actually awake. This is especially important for kitties that stay home alone while their humans are working. Your pet won’t enjoy sitting in a dark, quiet house any more than you would! Make sure your furball has plenty of toys, and give her things to explore, like paper bags, newspaper tunnels, and pet furniture. Window seats are also beneficial.
Not Enough Veterinary Care
Many of our feline patients should really come in more often. Just like people, cats are susceptible to illness and disease. These issues are always easier to treat when they are caught early. Fluffy should also be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and kept current on exams, vaccines, and parasite control products.
Dirty Litterboxes
We don’t need to explain this one. Cats hate dirty bathrooms, and who can blame them?
Love
Kitties are always happiest when they feel loved and safe. Pay attention to Fluffy! Also, if your furry buddy does something wrong, don’t punish her for it. Focus on rewarding good behavior instead.
