Playing With a Senior Cat

February 15 2021

As your cat a ges, she’ll go through many of the same changes that people do over time. She’ll slow down a bit, and start spending more time napping. She may also seem a bit stiff, and could have trouble jumping or climbing. However, even older kitties benefit from regular play sessions. Here, a Cherry Hill, NJ vet offers some advice on keeping Fluffy active as she ages.

C hoose Soft Surfaces

When playing with your kitty, always pick spots with good traction and a soft surface. A carpeted area is perfect. That way, you don’t have to worry about Fluffy hurting herself if she falls.

Make It Routine

Our feline friends are very much creatures of habit. You may notice that your furball diligently follows her own kitty schedule for things like naps, meals, meditation, and more naps. Try to play with Fluffy every day, and at roughly the same time.

Let Kitty Win

Cats are very emotional. Just like people, their mental well-being plays a huge role in their overall health. It’s important to let your kitty ‘catch’ her quarry sometimes. Otherwise, she may get discouraged. If that happens, you may find yourself with a sad, mopey furball on your hands. You don’t want that!

Don’t Fret About Exhaustion

When playing with senior dogs, you need to be careful that they don’t overexert themselves trying to please you. This is one thing you definitely don’t have to worry about with cats. When Fluffy gets even a little bit tired, she’ll just stop playing and wander off in search of an appealing spot to nap in.

Understand The Benefits

Playing with your aging kitty is a wonderful way to keep her healthy and entertained in her golden years. Running and jumping are great for Fluffy physically. Plus, timing those pounces offer beneficial mental stimulation, which will keep her mind healthy. This can help ward off cognitive decline.

Have Fun With It

Don’t think of playing with your feline buddy as a chore. It’s actually something both of you should look forward to! Kitties never stop being adorable, and they are at their cutest when they’re being playful. Even if Fluffy taps out after a few pounces, you’ll probably still end up smiling at her antics.
