There’s an adorable doggy holiday coming up. October 17th is National Fetch Day! Dogs have many wonderful traits, but one of the cutest is the way they love chasing and returning things we throw. Read on as a local Cherry Hill, NJ vet discusses Fido’s favorite game.
Origins of Fetch
When did our canine pals decide they like bringing us things? Well, this really started when dogs were first trained to retrieve small game and/or fowl on hunts. This was a highly prized ability, and one breeders deliberately looked for. Nowadays, Fido brings us more sticks and tennis balls than ducks, but that’s fine by us!
Translations
Fetch translates into many different languages. In Germany, one might tell Fido to Brrring. French dogs may be told to Rapporte, while pooches that speak Czech or Dutch may be commanded to Aport or Apport, respectively. Spanish dogs, on the other hand, may know the word as Trae.
Safety Concerns
Fetch isn’t the most dangerous activity for Fido, but there are some things to keep in mind. First and foremost, only play with safe objects. Also, be sure to choose things that are the right size for your furry friend. For instance, tennis balls may be fine for a Golden Retriever to run after, but can be a choking risk for a Saint Bernard. If you have a big dog, you’ll also need to be careful with how high you throw things. Many of these guys should not be encouraged to jump or stand on their back legs, as it puts a lot of strain on their bones and joints. Ask your vet for more information.
Benefits of Playing Fetch
It doesn’t take a genius to know that playing Fetch is lots of fun for Fido. It’s also quite beneficial for him. For one thing, this is a great way for your canine companion to get his daily doggy workout in. This will help keep your pet fit and allow him to burn off any excess energy he has. Playing Fetch also provides your pup with beneficial mental stimulation.
