Cats certainly are interesting little furballs. Fluffy may be small, but she has a huge purrsonality! While we have gotten to know our feline buddies quite well over time, they do have a few habits that often leave us laughing, scratching our heads, or both. Read on as a Cherry Hill, NJ vet explains some of Fluffy’s more unusual behaviors.
Box Obsession
If you have a cat, you may have noticed that if you put a box down on the floor, your curious little pet will usually waste no time in jumping into it. Fluffy’s love of boxes is definitely one of her more adorable quirks. (It’s worth noting that big cats also love boxes.) Technically, this may be because kitties feel more secure in small spaces, and that boxes may also stay quite warm. However, this doesn’t explain why cats don’t seem to care if box is too big, too small, or nothing more than a square outline taped onto a floor.
Extreme Napping
Cats certainly are drowsy little furballs. While the average cat sleeps about 14 hours a day, kitties can sleep as much as 20 hours a day. That’s more than almost any other creature on the planet, with the exception of opossums, certain bats, and some teenagers. Why is Fluffy so tired? One theory is that our feline pals spend enormous amounts of energy in short periods when hunting, and therefore need lots of time to recharge. (Note: most of the other predators on the planet get by on less excessive amounts of sleep, but that’s another topic.)
Giving Us Presents
Does your furry pal like to leave you ‘gifts’ on your doorstep? It seems that old habits die hard. When we first domesticated cats, we valued them for their hunting prowess, and likely rewarded them with food, ear scritches, and praise. However, Fluffy apparently never got the memo that we don’t really value dead mice very much these days.
Purring
One of the most adorable things about cats is the fact that they literally vibrate with happiness. Kitties don’t just purr when they are happy, however: they also purr when they are sick or scared. This may be their way of soothing and healing themselves… and us!
