7 Ways to Beat Litterbox Odors

May 15 2018

Our feline friends are absolutely wonderful pets. While Fluffy has many great traits, the fact that she will use a litterbox to do her business is definitely one of the best. However, while your pet’s personal powder room does make life easier for you, it won’t necessarily do anything for your décor. Kitty litterboxes can get, well, rather stinky. In this article, a Cherry Hill, NJ vet offers tips on beating that litterbox smell.

Cleaning

First things first: make sure to keep your cat’s litterbox nice and clean. We recommend scooping daily, and changing the litter weekly.

Placement

Choosing the right location for your kitty’s powder room is very important. Opt for a spot that is well-ventilated. If you put Fluffy’s litterbox in a spare bathroom, keep the fan running in that room.

Choose The Right Products

Choosing the right products can make a big difference! Cats often have their own purrsonal preferences about litter and litterboxes. Experiment a bit to see what works best for you and your kitty.

Deodorizers

There are now many different products that will help fight litterbox odors. You can get powders or liners made just for Fluffy’s bathroom. Baking powder also works great. Air fresheners can be very helpful as well. Look for ones that break down scent molecules instead of masking them with perfume.

Multiple Cat Tactics

Our feline pals hate sharing bathrooms! If you have more than one kitty, you’ll need more than one litterbox. The rule of thumb is one box per furball, plus at least one extra.

Plants

Plants can really make your home look nice and fresh. They also help filter air, which will help keep your home smelling clean. Just be sure to only choose pet-safe plants. Boston ferns are a good option. Spider plants are another good choice. You can find more nontoxic plants listed at the ASPCA website.

Proper Kitty Diet

A good diet is crucial to your kitty’s health in many ways. But did you know that Fluffy’s diet will also affect how her waste smells? It goes without saying that litterboxes don’t exactly smell like roses. However, if your cat’s waste is extraordinarily stinky, or if your feline buddy has diarrhea, she may be having digestive issues. Contact your vet immediately.
