Fall is officially here! If you have a dog, this is a great time of year to take some long, relaxing strolls with him, and just enjoy the beautiful weather and changing foliage. However, you may want to add a few things to your autumn to-do list to keep Fido comfortable, safe, and happy this autumn. Here, a Cherry Hill, NJ vet lists some fall care tips for dogs.
Doghouse
If your pooch has a doghouse, give it a good cleaning and inspection. Make sure Fido’s doghouse is well-insulated, and that the door faces away from prevailing winds. It should also be raised off the ground a bit to keep snow and water out.
Fur
Fall is a peak shedding time. Brushing Fido daily will remove dead fur from his coat before it ends up on your couch or clothes. Also, make sure your pet is current on his parasite control products.
Clothes
Some dogs need extra protection against cold weather. When shopping for your canine buddy, avoid anything that is tight, itchy, or constricting. You’ll also want to stay away from items with small parts that he may try to eat. Fall is a great time to sort and clean Fido’s old clothes. Toss anything that is ripped, worn, or too tight.
Bedding
Nothing is cuter than a sweet dog peacefully napping in a cozy bed on a cold day. Make sure Fido has a comfy bed to snuggle up in!
Autumn Dangers
In fall, people often fill their cars with antifreeze, and prep their lawns and gardens for winter. Take care not to expose Fido to dangerous chemicals, such as antifreeze, pesticides, or fertilizers. Mold, mildew, and toxic seasonal plants are also dangerous. Halloween decorations and candies are another concern, as they present both choking and poisoning hazards. When walking your pet, avoid areas where wild animals may be lurking. Last but not least, keep your pup away from fires, space heaters, and other potential dangers.
Diet
If Fido is a working dog; senior; puppy; or nursing mama; or if he spends a lot of time outdoors, he may need more calories in the colder months. Some pups will also benefit from certain supplements. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.
