Small Cage
Guinea pigs are very active and curious, and need room to run around and play. One of the most common mistakes in Guinea pig care is not providing a large enough cage.
Not Enough Toys
A cavy that sits alone in his cage all day with nothing to do will become sad and depressed. Make sure to keep your cavy entertained by providing plenty of suitable playthings. Change them out frequently to keep things fun and exciting.
Hay Trouble
Guinea pigs should have fresh Timothy hay available at all times. Not giving piggies enough hay, or feeding the wrong kind of hay, is another common issue.
‘Peticure’ Problems
Cavies need their nails trimmed regularly, about once a month. Overgrown nails can curl back under and hurt your pet’s little feet. Make sure to keep your cavy’s claws clipped.
Lack of Variety
Just like people, cavies will get bored eating the same thing every day. Keep dinnertime fun by providing a variety of foods and treats.
Loneliness
Guinea pigs often are much happier with a buddy of their own kind to play with and snuggle up to at night. Keep your furball from getting lonely by giving him a roommate.
Lack Of Chewable Material
Guinea pig teeth never stop growing. In order to keep your piggie’s teeth from becoming too long and causing dental problems, you’ll need to give the little one lots of chew toys. Wooden, wicker, and straw toys are good options. Cardboard and paper are also acceptable choices.
Vitamin C Deficiency
Cavies must have vitamin C. They can’t manufacture their own, so their diets must include this crucial nutrient. Don’t use vitamin drops or supplements, however: your pet really needs to get his Vitamin C from food.
