Walk Your Pet Month

January 15 2017

Happy New Year! We want to wish all of our clients a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2017! Did you know that January is also Walk Your Pet Month? Read on as a Cherry Hill, NJ vet talks about walking your animal companion.

Walking Fluffy

We know, when someone mentions walking a pet, dogs are probably the first thing that come to mind. However, some cats also like taking walks, although this is by no means a unanimous opinion among Fluffy and her friends. If you have a super bold, frisky cat, or a kitty that was once an outdoor pet, consider walking your feline pal. It will take time to train your furball, and you’ll need to get your kitty used to the leash before you bring her outdoors, but it may be fun for both you and your pet. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Benefits of Walks

Walking isn’t just great exercise for you: it’s also wonderful for your pet. Dogs in particular really benefit from the change of scenery, activity, and mental stimulation regular walks provide. A good walk can also burn off Fido’s excess energy, leaving you with a calmer, better-behaved pup.

Walking Safety Tips

Always keep your pet’s safety in mind. If you are walking your dog along the side of a road, keep Fido on the outside: he has a smaller profile, and won’t be as easy for drivers to see. This also reduces the chances of his veering into traffic. When walking after dark, use reflective gear, and choose well-lit, familiar routes. Last but not least, be careful with retractable leashes: they’re great in some areas, but can be hazardous in certain situations, especially if the mechanism jams.

Walking Hacks

Consider designating a specific jacket for your pet’s walks. Keep baggies, spare keys, gloves, and a portable phone charger in the pocket. That way, you won’t have to run around gathering your things before heading out the door.

Preventative Care

Make sure to keep up on your pet’s parasite control products and vaccinations. It’s also important to make sure your four-legged buddy is microchipped and wearing current ID tags. Ask your vet for more information.
