The weather is steadily getting warmer, and it won’t be long before summer officially arrives. Don’t let Fido get too hot! Your canine buddy is already wearing a fur coat, so it’s very easy for him to overheat. Here, a Cherry Hill, NJ vet discusses keeping your pet safe from heatstroke.
Basic Precautions
Keep Fido safe and comfy in rooms cooled by fans or air conditioners. It’s also important to make sure he always has shade and plenty of fresh water. Never, ever leave your furry pal unattended in a car. Temperatures in a closed vehicle can reach deadly levels in just minutes!
Cooling Fido Off
If your pet likes swimming, take him for a dip on hot days. You can also give Fido a kiddie pool to splash around in. Many dogs enjoy being sprayed with a hose, or splashing in the water from a sprinkler. (Note: if you use reclaimed water for your yard, you may want to get a good hose filter.)
Watch For Warning Signs
Keep a close eye out for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Some early warning signs include panting; drooling; reddened or pale gums; a red tongue; trembling; dizziness; vomiting; diarrhea; and depression. If you notice any of these symptoms in your canine friend, take immediate steps to cool Fido off. Get him to a cool, shady area and offer him some water. Next, soak your pup in cool (not cold) water, and, if possible, point a fan at him. Once Fido is stable enough to be moved, bring him right to the vet.
Exercise
On sweltering days, schedule Fido’s walks and play sessions for mornings and evenings, when it’s cooler out. Don’t encourage your furry friend to run and play in the heat.
Senior Dogs/Puppies
Some dogs are extra susceptible to temperature extremes. Puppies, senior pets, nursing mamas, and pooches with medical issues are particularly sensitive to heat. If Fido falls into one of these categories, take extra care with your canine pal!
Summer ‘Do
If Fido has thick fur, he may be more comfortable with a summer haircut. However, this isn’t the right solution for every dog. With some pooches, their fur actually insulates them from the heat. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.
