Things to Consider Before Getting a Bunny

April 15 2019

With Easter approaching quickly, bunnies are in the spotlight right now. While Floppy does make a great pet, it’s important to do some research before adopting one. These little furballs have some very unique care needs. Read on as a Cherry Hill, NJ vet lists some things you may want to think about before adopting a rabbit.

Adoption Is Forever

Easter is always a bit sad when it comes to bunny adoptions. Many people buy bunnies as whims, only to soon realize that caring for Floppy takes work. This results in many wonderful rabbits being rehomed. This is very hard on bunnies: just like other pets, they can get quite attached to their owners. They can also feel scared or stressed by major changes. Make sure you are willing to care for Floppy for her entire life.

Bunnies Chew

One thing that many people don’t realize about bunnies is the fact that they need to chew. A lot. Otherwise, they can develop very painful dental issues. You’ll need to provide your furry pal with lots of suitable chew toys. Fortunately, this doesn’t have to be expensive: many cardboard, wood, and wicker items will do just fine.

Floppy Needs Playtime

Your pet will need several hours out of her cage every day. Otherwise, she’ll become quite frustrated and restless. However, before letting Floppy out to play, you’ll need to do some bunnyproofing. This entails sealing off any spaces your furball could get into; covering or protecting things like wires, cords, furniture legs, and baseboards; removing or securing anything that could be toxic and/or otherwise dangerous; and keeping personal items and anything small and sharp out of paws’ reach.

Rabbits Can Be Messy

While rabbits can be trained to use a litterbox, there is a bit of a learning curve here. Even perfectly trained bunnies will sometimes leave a mess. Be sure that you are willing to pick up after Floppy.

Rabbitude

Bunnies are certainly adorable, but don’t let that cute face fool you. Floppy can be notoriously stubborn! She also needs lots of TLC to thrive. Make sure you have lots of time to spend with your furry pal.
