Understanding Your Cat

November 1 2018

Cats are very mysterious little furballs. They are ferocious, independent predators that don’t actually need us, yet have become absolute experts at getting us to pamper them. Fluffy can also be rather temperamental. She can be purring and cuddly one moment, and then suddenly bite you the next. What’s that all about? Read on as a Cherry Hill, NJ vet offers tips on understanding your quirky pet.

Happy Cats

If Fluffy is happy, she will be pretty relaxed, and won’t have any qualms about sprawling out in the middle of the floor or snoozing in a room full of people. She may also be very cuddly, and purr when you pet her. Happy cats also often like to ‘talk’ to their owners, and may answer when spoken to. Your feline pal may also carry her tail up. She might even come when you call her!

Angry Cats

If your kitty is actually mad, she may flatten her ears back, and lash her tail. She may also growl, and attack viciously. Cats can become aggressive for many reasons, from territorialism to anxiety to fear. If your furball often attacks, ask your vet or a cat behaviorist for advice.

Playful Cats

It isn’t always easy to tell the difference between a frisky kitty and an angry one. After all, our feline pals do sometimes bite or scratch playfully! If Fluffy is just playing, she won’t bite or scratch full force. She will likely have her ears up. Fluffy may also lose steam fairly quickly, and start licking you instead of biting.

Nervous Cats

Some kitties are bold and fearless, while others are quite nervous. An anxious cat may turn her ears back or sideways, and keep her tail down. Scaredy-cats also often run and hide at the slightest disturbance. Make sure your feline pal has a hiding place in every room.

Judgmental Cats

Cats like to keep a close eye on their humans. Fluffy may follow you from room to room to watch what you’re doing. She may also stare at you with that smug, self-assured expression kitties do so well. Is Fluffy actually judging you? It’s hard to say for sure, but it’s definitely within the realm of possibilities!
