Going to a new home is a huge change for our feline friends, and one that can be very stressful for them. Making sure your pet’s adjustment phase goes smoothly is very important! Here, a Cherry Hill, NJ vet offers some tips on helping your cat adjust to her new home.
Supplies
You’ll need to do a bit of shopping for your feline buddy. Fluffy will need dishes, toys, a litterbox and litter, bedding, treats, and a carrier. We also recommend getting some pieces of cat furniture, like a scratching post or tower. As for food, if you know what your new pet has been eating, get that same brand at first. If you do want to change your kitty’s diet, you’ll need to do that slowly, as otherwise your cat could get an upset tummy. Ask your vet for dietary recommendations.
Kitty Comforts
Put Fluffy in a quiet room with all of her new things, at least for the first few days. That way, your kitty will have a safe, comfortable spot to relax and settle in. You’ll probably spend a lot of time visiting your new pet, so be sure to include a comfy seat for yourself!
Veterinary Care
Make a veterinary appointment for Fluffy as soon as possible. Cats should all be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and current on their vaccinations and parasite control. It’s also important to get your furball a thorough exam, and to get some specific recommendations on her care regimen. Ask your vet for more information.
Adjustment
If you have other pets or children, wait until you get the green light from your vet before letting Fluffy out of quarantine. If you have other animals, you’ll want to introduce your furry pals slowly and carefully. Introductions are a huge deal to kitties! Ask your vet for specific advice
Purrs
Some kitties will immediately make themselves at home, while more timid cats can take months to settle in. Give Fluffy the time she needs, and don’t force attention on her. With proper care, you’ll turn your furball into a purrball in no time!
