Helpful Tips for Senior Dog Care

October 1 2015

Is your canine friend growing old? Fido’s golden years are a very special time. Senior dogs are just as adorable as puppies, and often have a calm, sweet demeanor that many people really enjoy. Aging dogs do have different care needs than younger pooches, however, so in order to keep your furry pal happy and healthy as he ages, you may need to adjust his care regimen a bit. Below, a Cherry Hill, NJ vet discusses caring for senior dogs.

Feeding

A good, nourishing diet is very important to Fido’s health. Give your furry buddy the best food you can afford. Many senior dogs find it easier to eat from elevated dishes, as they don’t cause as much neck strain. Certain supplements, such as fish oil, may also be beneficial. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Comfort

Just like us, dogs often get stiff and sore as they age. We strongly recommend investing in a good, orthopedic doggy bed. Fido will also become more sensitive to temperature extremes in his golden years. Keep him indoors as much as possible in bad weather.

Exercise

Keeping Fido active will help him stay healthy as he ages. Your dog’s exact exercise requirements will depend on his breed, health, and weight. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Grooming

Regular grooming will remove dead fur and keep Fido’s coat from getting matted. Nail trims are also very important. Overgrown nails are very uncomfortable! They can affect your dog’s gait, and even aggravate bone/joint conditions, such as arthritis.

Massage

One great thing you can do for your senior dog is to give him weekly massages. While you’re pampering your pooch, and helping soothe his aches and pains, use the time to check for any bumps or swelling.

Mobility

Fido may begin to have difficulty getting in and out of vehicles or climbing stairs as he ages. Pet ramps or stairs may help him get around more easily.

Veterinary Care

Be sure to keep up on your furry pal’s parasite control, as well as recommended vaccines. Fido may need to see the vet more often in his golden years, so he can be monitored for signs of developing health problems. Dental care is also very important. Be sure to keep Fido’s choppers in good shape!
